  • Orange-colored wire rope for ease of recognition
  • Stainless steel 18-8 is corrosion-resistant, and withstands high temperatures for a wide range of operation
  • Stainless steel is a versatile material, commonly used in a wide variety of applications, and in saline atmospheres

  • 7x7 strand core is stronger but less flexible than 6x19 and 6x36 class constructions

Nylon-coated, stainless steel wire rope with 7x7 standard construction is commonly used in pulleys, and in aircraft and automotive controls. This wire rope is orange-colored for ease of recognition. Stainless steel 304, also called 18-8, is corrosion-resistant, resists scaling, and withstands high temperatures for a wide range of operation. Stainless steel is a versatile material, commonly used in a wide variety of applications, and in saline atmospheres. Nylon coating is very strong, lightweight, and flexible, has excellent abrasion-resistance, and resists crushing and cracking. 7x7 strand core has seven strands of wire rope with seven wires in each strand formed helically around a strand core. 7x7 strand core is stronger but less flexible than 6x19 and 6x36 class constructions.

Wire rope, also called wire cable, is an assembly of wire strands formed helically around a central core. It is used for pulling, lifting, rigging, hoisting, and motion-control applications most commonly found in the manufacturing, marine, oil, mining, fiber-optics, aircraft, automotive accessory, and construction industries. A combination of characteristics including material, finish, construction, diameter, length, and breaking strength combines to give each rope its performance ability. Wire rope materials are selected for properties such as strength, elasticity, conductivity, and chemical- and weather-resistance. For strength purposes, most wire rope is made of bright (uncoated or bare) wire. However, it is also produced in a variety of finishes, such as polypropylene (PE), vinyl (PVC), or nylon. These coatings can increase overall durability and strength, and allow for specific use. The breaking strength for wire rope is the strength at which new wire rope will fail under a stationary load. Breaking strength is not considered safe working load (SWL) limit.

  • Monel
Monel Alloy 400 offers higher corrosion resistance than Stainless Steel. Monel 400 is comprised of approximately 66 percent nickel and 31.5 percent copper, with the remainder a mix of iron and manganese. Monel is a trademark of Special Metals Corporation, was created in 1901 and named for company president Ambrose Monell. Monel's corrosion resistance makes it ideal for marine applications such as piping systems, pump impellers, trolling wire, and strainer baskets. Some alloys are completely non-magnetic and are used for anchor cable aboard minesweepers, housings for magnetic-field measurement equipment, and have applications in the oil drilling industry. Multiple wire strands, cables and wire ropes are actually machines. Each component wire and strand physically adjusts to contribute to the cable or wire ropes load bearing capacity. Generally the more wires in a strand, cable or wire rope the more flexible it behaves. A typical Loos and Co. product is 7x19 cable. In this cable there are seven strands of nineteen wires each, (7x19=133). There are 133 wires working together as a machine in this particular construction. Each application has a construction best suited for it. Small Parts stocks wire-rope in the following construction types: 1x7, 1x19, 3x7, 7x7, 7x19, 6x42, 19x7, 6x19.

  • Corrosion Resistant
Stainless Steel is a large and widely used family of Iron-Chromium Alloys. Stainless Steels are alloys of iron and carbon that contain between 12 and 30 percent Chromium, plus other alloying elements. The chromium, which helps develop a passive surface oxide film, provides corrosion resistance in stainless steels. Stainless Steels are wrought or cast and consist of several families that are named for their metallurgical structure. Stainless Steels are fabricated and welded by all common processes and are used for their corrosion resistance, high-temperature strength, scaling resistance, and low-temperature toughness. These properties account for their extremely wide use in practically every industry. Density is .29 lbs./in3 for 300 series. Most stainless steel products in this catalog are of type 300 series. Formability is unusually good, and cold working results in increased strength. These alloys are non-magnetic in the annealed condition, although some may become slightly magnetic after cold working. They can be hardened only by cold working, and not by heat treatment. Stainless Steel 18-8 denotes 18 percent chromium and 8 percent nickel. Welding characteristics are very good. Widely used in marine environments and in applications which require exposure to acetic acid compounds, and other chemical corrosives. Multiple wire strands, cables and wire ropes are actually machines. Each component wire and strand physically adjusts to contribute to the cable or wire ropes load bearing capacity. • Phosphorous bronze
C544 Phosphor Bronze is a Copper alloy with tin as the principal alloying material rather than zinc. When polished, bronze develops a beautiful golden finish. A typical 80-20 bronze would have an approximate density of 0.315 lb/in3 and have a melting point of approx. 1868F (1020C). Ductility decreases rapidly with the increase of tin in the alloy mix. Phosphor bronze has a tin content of 1.25 to 10 percent, and possesses excellent cold-working and mechanical properties. Multiple wire strands, cables and wire ropes are actually machines. Each component wire and strand physically adjusts to contribute to the cable or wire ropes load bearing capacity. Generally the more wires in a strand, cable or wire rope the more flexible it behaves. While it is about the most flexible wire rope made it has a comparatively low breaking strength and should never be subjected to severe abrasion. 6 x 42 Fiber Core is the most flexible rope of all the six-strand constructions. However, it is not as strong or abrasion resistant as the others.
